EXILE – New worlds in music

Immigration flows have always existed, people have been leaving their native land since time immemorial and for very different reasons: war, persecution, but also deprivation or climate change. In the interwar period of the twentieth century, a whole host of top composers took the plunge, fleeing the Nazis. Their final destination was often the USA where many chose to build a new life in Los Angeles or New York. Their artistic life therefore took a new turn, their exile changed their view of themselves and the world. The folklore of the homeland left behind became for some of them an element to be cherished. Pacifism emerged in an enthusiastic way, while Europe was torn apart by fascism and communism…
After several joined projects Collegium Vocale Gent and Het Collectief zoom in on the fascinating, sometimes haunting exile theme and want to shed light on the individual, invariably tragic stories of the great hordes of people who leave their homeland today.

A co-production of Collegium Vocale Gent and Perpodium.
